Real Estate FAQ Costa Rica

Question: Do pensioners and retirees have to pay tax on their pension payments in Costa Rica?

LKI: No. Pensioners and retirees in Costa Rica do not pay taxes on their retirement income.

In addition, on September 21 of this year, 20 members of parliament tabled a bill in parliament that would allow digital nomads to work in the country for a year, with the profits made abroad being tax-free in Costa Rica.

The one-year visa (extendable for another six months) requires an income from a foreign source of at least 5000 dollars per month, health insurance for the duration of the stay in Costa Rica and includes the nomad’s family.

Nomads can leave at any time, there is no minimum length of stay.

According to the draft law, the immigration authorities have 15 calendar days to decide on the visa application.

The bill is sponsored by 20 members of parliament, and so far there has been no significant opposition to the bill.
