In 1885, Bernardo Soto Alfaro, former President of Costa Rica, acquired the Hacienda Paso Hondo. In honor of his wife, Pacifica Fernandez Guardia, he renamed the farm Hacienda La Pacífica. The house where Bernado Soto and his wife lived still stands at the Hacienda.

Today, Hacienda La Pacífica is one of the most prestigious and well-known properties in Costa Rica.

The property covers 6,546 acres and is located in the province of Guanacaste, 3.1 miles from Cañas. Caldera Harbor lies some 56 miles away.

The Hacienda stands out for its enormous water supply. The river Tenorio crosses the farm which has an additional five wells.

Excellent location. The main access is via the Panamerican Highway. Distances: Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia 30 minutes, tourist centers (Coco, Flamingo, Conchal, Arenal) about 1 hour, Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela 2 hours, Great Metropolitan Area 2.5 hours.

Current operations: hotel / restaurant, rice, sugarcane, livestock, fish farming.

Except for the hotel / restaurant, all areas are leased to third parties (with annual termination clauses). Tilapia fish farming is currently not operating as the contract with a third party has expired.

Hotel. 25 rooms, pool (66 x 49 x 4.0 – 5.5), restaurant, covered event area overlooking the pool for weddings, parties, conferences, etc. for up to 150 people.

Houses: All 8 houses are rented. 6 houses (861 ft²) for $500, 1 house (2,366 ft²) for $1,300 and 1 house (3,229 ft²) for $2,000 a month.

Rice: 264.4 acres of white rice (2 crops), 128.5 acres of organic rice, 1 crop per year. The farm is the only certified organic rice farm in Costa Rica.

Sugar cane: 741.3 acres, harvesting in January / February 2019.

Livestock. 1,482.6 acres are assigned to cattle breeding. There are currently about 400 animals on the farm.

Tilapia fish farming. 77 tanks, annual capacity up to 1,500 tons, can be expanded to 7,000 tons per year with additional tanks.

Quarry: The finca has a quarry to maintain its internal road network.

Payment for environmental services. 3,212 acres are under the management of FONAFIFO (PSA program, Pago por Servicios Ambientales = payment of ecosystem services). FONAFIFO pays the owners and holders of forests / forestry a financial recognition for services that protect and improve the environment. The administration is voluntary and can be terminated at any time.

All Hacienda agro-industry activities are ISO 14.001 and OHSAS 18.001 certified.

Investment opportunities

Pineapple: Farm soil allows for production of pineapple. There is already a pineapple farm about 25 miles away.

Tilapia / Pangasius: Pangasius is an alternative to Tilapia production. Right now is a good time to position Pangasius in the (US) market.

1.2 miles from Hacienda La Pacifica is a farm that sells Pangasius fries.

Also, along the Tenorio River there is a small Pangasius farm.

With these suppliers the existing 77 tanks on the finca can be replenished quickly.
